Age of Onset
Among high school students who have used alcohol, the average age of first use is 13.7 years. Age at first use was slightly higher for females than males (13.8 and 13.5 years, respectively).
The average age of first use was slightly higher for marijuana (14 years). Again, females reported a higher age of first use compared to males (14.2 and 13.8 years, respectively).
Theses results suggest white students have a higher age of onset for the use of alcohol than other race/ethnic groups. The age of onset of marijuana use is higher for white and Asian students compared to others.
These results suggest that females have a higher age of onset for alcohol and marijuana than males.
Theses results suggest that the age of onset of use for African Americans is younger than whites and Hispanics for both alcohol and marijuana.
