High School

Among high school students who have used alcohol, the average age of first use is 13.4 years. Age at first use was slightly younger for males than females (13.1 and 13.6 years, respectively).
The average age of first use was slightly higher for marijuana (14.1 years). Again, males reported a younger age of first use compared to females (13.8 and 14.3 years, respectively).

Theses results suggest African American and Asian students have a younger age of onset for the use of alcohol than other racial/ethnic groups. The age of onset of marijuana use is younger for African American and Hispanic/Latino students compared to other races and ethnicities.
Note: No data was available for 2017-18 on age of onset of marijuana use in American Indian high school students.
